Vivek Vilasini (IND)
Vivek Vilasini (b. 1964, Thrissur, Kerala) is a contemporary Indian artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans photography, sculpture, installation, and new media. Alongside his widely exhibited artistic work, he has maintained a sustained commitment to ecological practice, most notably through the creation and long-term care of a self-sustaining food forest in Kerala, initiated in 2008.
Vilasini’s engagement with soil, native plant species, and regenerative systems extends his artistic inquiry into the living landscape. The food forest functions as an evolving ecological artwork, foregrounding interdependence, biodiversity, and slow, non-extractive modes of making. His attention to soil as a living, long-term project reflects enduring concerns in his work with memory, displacement, and belonging—translated from the canvas into the material impact of practice on land.
Educated in marine studies and political science, and trained in traditional sculptural practices, Vilasini brings material sensitivity and philosophical rigor to both art and ecology. His acclaimed series Between One Shore and Several Others has been exhibited internationally, alongside numerous solo and group exhibitions at major institutions and biennales worldwide.
Vilasini lives and works between Kochi, Kerala, and Abu Dhabi, UAE. Across mediums and environments, his practice emphasizes responsibility to place, engaging the land not only as a resource but as a shared field of care, developed in dialogue with local custodians and the wider community.
